Champions League Opening Week: Records, Shockers and What Comes Next
Ten games, thirty-eight goals, not one draw. The 2026-27 league phase opened with two nights of records — and a few results nobody called. Here’s what actually happened, and the shirts to have on before Matchday 2.
The Numbers That Broke On Opening Week
Ten games in, the storylines are already stacking up. Six worth writing down:
Erling Haaland’s brace at Porto took him to 59 goals in 59 Champions League appearances. Nobody in the competition’s history has started like this.
His 14th-minute opener against Inter was his 71st Champions League goal — level with Raúl, and he’s still 26.
The double also moved Haaland level with Sergio Agüero on 36 Champions League goals for City — in fewer than half the appearances.
Real’s keeper marked his 100th Champions League appearance with seven saves, including stops from Lautaro and Mkhitaryan in the closing minutes.
Inter had 21 shots and completed 94% of their passes at the Bernabéu — the best passing accuracy any side has managed against Real since 2003-04. They still lost.
Porto failed to register a single shot on target at home for the first time since 2017. City’s defence, apparently, is just like that now.
Night One: Six Games, No Draws, Twenty-One Goals
Tuesday's slate delivered—Real and City both winning without ever really being comfortable, Dortmund's striker scoring at both ends, and Betis coming from two down in France.

Night Two: Goals Everywhere
Wednesday kept the pace. Barcelona and PSG combined for eleven goals, Liverpool came from behind at Anfield, and Arsenal won the hard way in Naples.

Five Things We Actually Learned
- Haaland is a certainty again. Two goals, 36 for City, 59 in 59 lifetime. After a season of people questioning whether the system suited him, he’s scored two in the opening 45 minutes of the new campaign.
- Mbappé’s Bernabéu story is no longer a debate. Level with Raúl at 26, five ahead of where most strikers ever get. He also led Real’s press in a game where Mourinho credited the defensive work for both goals.
- Nobody is defending. Ten games, thirty-eight goals, zero draws. Lille led Betis 2–0 at home and lost. Brugge nearly took Villa. The new table is going to be volatile all the way to January.
- The goalkeepers are earning it. Courtois made seven saves on his 100th appearance. Diogo Costa held City out for a half. On a night of 21 goals across six games, the keepers were the reason some of them stayed respectable.
- Depth is going to decide this league phase. Eight games each, one table, no groups — and sides like Villa and Betis winning away by matching the bigger names' intensity rather than their budgets.
